Krystal and Ahmed
USA and Egypt
How did you two meet?
We met on a dating website.
Who made the first move?
Ahmed messaged Krystal first on the dating website. Krystal was crazy and responded back!
Tell us about your first date.
I think I would consider our "first date" as day 3 after meeting. We spent the day at Dubai Mall, which is one of the largest malls in the world. We visited the aquarium they had inside, took lots of pictures around the mall and enjoyed some nice conversation at Starbucks. I started getting extremely sick this day, so he also bought me some hot arabian tea and took me in the evening to get medicine.
How long have you been together?
We met online in May 2019. We married in November 2019. Almost 1 year "together" and 5 months married.
What has been one major challenge in your relationship?
Video Calls. When he lived in the United Arab Emirates, video calling through platforms like Facebook, Skype and What's App was banned, so it was tricky to video chat with him. He recently moved to Egypt, where now there is no ban on various video calling apps, but their internet speed is much slower and he is also limited to GB each month. It's resulted in us always having tricky video calling.
How do you settle disagreements?
We actually haven't had any disagreements about anything. We communicate very well and put ourselves in each other's shoes. We have had to compromise on a few things just due to cultural differences so I anticipate any future disagreements would be very similar.
If you are from two different cultures, how do you deal with the cultural differences?
Our cultures are very different. We mostly laugh about the differences. For some things that may be more serious, such as how to name children, we have discussed and decided together how we would do this. We usually try to understand what part of it is important and find a way to combine the cultures. If one of us doesn't have a preference and the other does, we go with what the other wants. Both of us are very open minded and willing to compromise.
Any memorable trips together?
We have only been to the United Arab Emirates, but I think our most memorable would be our wedding and the process of getting married. When I landed in Dubai, we spent the next 3 days running errands to get various papers for our marriage in this country including medical test and me passing an Islam exam to prove I was Muslim (since my country doesn't track religions on our official documents).
When we finally got all the papers, we went to the court the next morning (we were doing just a small court ceremony). I have spent my whole life being obsessed with ancient Egyptian culture and the fact that I was about to marry an Egyptian was so exciting, but to top it off, the court was in an Egyptian themed mall with a pyramid on top. So I was able to marry my Egyptian husband in a pyramid surrounded by pharaohs. It was like this crazy dream come true. I also got extremely sick on my wedding day and my throat was killing me and I had a bad fever so after we completed the ceremony and took pictures, I spent the rest of the day in bed sick.
When and how do you plan to close the distance?
We are currently trying to figure that out! Stay tuned!
