Sofia & Kevin
Milan, Italy (Sofia) | Dublin, Ireland (Kevin) 1850km apart
How did you two meet?
In Ireland 6 years ago, Sofia was doing a year of school there. However, we did not get the chance to meet while we were both in Ireland, our relationship was solely online. From the age of 18 it took us 6 years to finally meet.
Who made the first move?
Kevin of course, he still does (but Sofia was the first to visit him)
Tell us about your first date.
As mentioned, our first date wasn't until 6 years went by and we finally met and went out for a meal together. The next day we got the train to Cork in Ireland where we spent a few days. On the Saturday we went on a road trip with some friends and saw the beautiful countryside of Ireland going to a little town called Kinsale. Then on the Sunday we went to a festival known as Independence where Biffy Clyro and Nothing but Thieves played (Now some of our favorite bands).
How long have you been together?
Known each other for 6 years and been together for 8 months.
What has been one major challenge in your relationship?
Distance is obviously the biggest challenge that anyone in a long distance relationship faces.
How do you settle disagreements?
Compromise, we are big fans of pro's and con's lists and with the challenges of planning things during a long distance relationship (take Coronavirus for example, ruining many of our and other couples plans), after we go through the pros and cons we choose a goal and we stick to it, we work as a team to reach that goal and day by day make it a reality.
If you are from two different cultures, how do you deal with the cultural differences?
Ireland and Italy are lucky in this respect as they share very similar values as cultures when it comes to valuing family and the type of upbringing. However there are some things that both our cultures have that are completely different to our own. However, in the end, we both respect each others culture greatly and work to incorporate them into our relationship no matter the location we are in for example Kevin plays Gaelic Football, an Irish national sport and recently he joined the local club in Milan so he can play here when he is over.
Any memorable trips together?
The trip to Cork as mentioned in the first date but also all last year. From September until January, Sofia was doing an Erasmus in the Netherlands in Nijmegen and we went on trips to Amsterdam and Klon in Germany while there. Then in January we went on a trip together to Brussels in Belgium. So with the back and forth from Ireland Italy and the Netherlands last year and the trips within those countries as well as trips to Belgium and Germany, we are a very well travelled couple. (in December 2019 alone, we visited 4 countries , the Netherlands, Germany, Ireland and Italy)
When and how do you plan to close the distance?
Speaking of the pros and cons earlier, we did a list and found a goal to work towards. So, Kevin plans to find a job in Milan in May when he graduates, he has already had a few interviews and things are looking good. Sofia plans to finish out her masters course in Milan and then apply for a PHD in a multitude of international universities so we will be on the road again in no time! (But this time together!)
Any words of advice for other LDR Couples?
Keep your chin up Buttercup, better days are coming just think of the ones you have had. Persevere and work together to get through rough times, at the end of the day you are a team so build each other up and get to the next moment when you are together.
